Streamside Rest

The path follows a shallow wooded valley, never far from running water. After a warm climb on the access track, the air turns cool and smells like wet stone and leaf mould. River's ears went up the moment she heard it.

We found a wide flat rock beside a bend in the stream — perfect for sitting, dipping hands, and letting her drink properly instead of the frantic trailhead slurps she usually manages. She put her front paws in twice, thought about a full swim, decided against it, then shook near my sandwich. Classic.

What to know

• Mostly shaded — a good pick for hot afternoons
• Stream level was low in late June; after heavy rain the rock-hop sections might need care
• Midges near the water at dusk; we packed repellent
• Loop is short enough for an after-work walk if you live nearby

A small hike that feels like a reset. We left unhurried and slightly damp.
