Oak Hollow is what we call it — not the official name on the map, but the hollow of old oaks halfway round is impossible to miss. The canopy closes overhead, the path softens underfoot, and even on a bright day the light comes down in patches.

River found The Stick about ten minutes in. Not a small stick. A branch with ambition. She carried it for the next mile until she got distracted by a squirrel she absolutely could not catch.

The trail is gentle up and down, nothing steep, with roots to step over and a few muddy squeezes between holly bushes. We passed two runners and a man with binoculars who nodded at River and said, "Good worker." She agreed.
