River's Favourite Field

There's a public footpath crossing a wide pasture on the edge of the village — we've walked it a dozen times now, and River has decided it belongs to her. She waits at the gate until I clip her off-lead, then trots exactly three metres ahead, checking back like a tour guide.

Last visit was golden hour. The grass had that late-day glow, the hills went pink, and she ran wide circles for the sheer joy of it before flopping on her side for a proper roll. I sat on the stile and let her be ridiculous.

• Very short — good on tired days or when time is tight
